Stringed Excellence: Guitarist, Violinist Shine

STRING THEORY: Ara Malikian (left) had the No. 2 concert on the new Hot Tickets chart; Billy Strings owned the rest of the top four. (Getty Images) Contrasts are stark atop Hot Tickets with performances by two artists in different parts of the world in different settings, one outdoor in the parking lot and the other indoor and socially distanced. Ranked No. 1 is his three-night engagement Sept. 11-13 in the parking lot at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. With tickets sold for up to four people in 1,307 vehicles, the headcount from all three shows hit 4,624. His $257,156… Continue Reading Stringed Excellence: Guitarist, Violinist Shine

(Getty Images) Charts largely static, but a few shows enter the rankings   2020 Q3 Hot Tickets | 2020 Q3 Top Stops | 2020 Q3 Top Stops North America Analyzing the state of the live entertainment industry for third quarter recaps sounds like an impossible task since the bulk of the live business is either nonexistent or scaled back considerably compared with previous years. But since our analysis is based on shows that occurred from the beginning of the chart year (Nov. 21, 2019) through the end of Q3 (Aug. 19, 2020) and not just during the third-quarter period, we are still able to create our standard Hot Tickets and Top Stops rankings. It does mean that all of the events appearing on the charts happened before the March 15 industry shutdown, because grosses and ticket counts from… Continue Reading Q3 2020: Same As It Ever Was (Sort Of)

Farm Aid Puts American Farmers Front and Center

FROM A SEED: John Mellencamp performs at the first Farm Aid in 1985 at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill. (Getty Images) LIVE! LANDMARKS Among fall’s many live entertainment traditions, Farm Aid has been one of the most prominent for the past 35 years. The multi-artist concert was organized in 1985 by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp as a benefit for America’s farmers and, in most years, has occurred in either September or October in U.S. markets stretching from Washington state to Washington, D.C. The first concert, on Sept. 22, 1985, in Champaign, Ill., was staged to raise awareness of the importance of family farms in the American culture as well as raise money — about $7 million that year — to help farmers remain in business during tough economic times. Along with the organizers, the first show featured more than 50 entertainers, generally musicians from country, folk and… Continue Reading Farm Aid Puts American Farmers Front and Center
